Also look at its color. Fresh brake fluid is generally clear to light amber; very dark fluid may be old and contaminated.

Use only the brake fluid type specified on the reservoir cap or in your owner’s manual. Mixing incorrect fluids can damage seals and create a much larger repair. Adding fluid may restore the level temporarily, but it does not repair a leak or replace worn brake parts.

Look for Obvious Warning Signs

A quick visual inspection can help you explain the issue clearly to a technician. Watch for these signs:

A do-it-yourself brake bleed can work on some older, straightforward vehicles, especially after a minor repair. The trade-off is that mistakes are easy to make. A bleed screw can break, the reservoir can run dry and introduce more air, or an ABS-equipped vehicle may retain trapped air that a basic two-person bleed does not remove.

If your pedal became soft after pads, calipers, hoses, or a master cylinder were replaced, it is particularly important to confirm that the system was bled correctly. A brake shop can also measure pad thickness, inspect rotors, check hose condition, and identify leaks that are not obvious from outside the vehicle.

Do Not Ignore a Soft Pedal That Returns

A pedal that feels better after bleeding but becomes soft again is not a normal result. That usually means air is re-entering the system, fluid is leaking, or a hydraulic component is failing internally. Repeatedly adding brake fluid or pumping the pedal may help you move the car a short distance, but it is not a dependable repair.

The same applies if the brake warning light comes on. Depending on the vehicle, that light may indicate low fluid, a parking brake issue, or a hydraulic fault. An ABS light does not always mean you have lost normal braking, but it can mean the anti-lock system is unavailable when you need it most.
